South Galway Athletic Club are proud to be twinned Vigatanes Del Volo.
The first contact came in spring 2014 from Xavier Soula, president of the french running club called ‘Vigatanes Del Volo’. He contacted Justin McDermott (who was then club SGAC P.R.O.) on Facebook looking to connect our two clubs. The ‘Vigatanes Del Volo’ club is based between the two towns of Le Boulou and Ceret, in Roussillon, a beautiful part of the south of France running from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean. Justin jumped at the chance and the connection started!
The first meeting was later that year when Keith Horan (who was then SGAC Chairperson) and family had a camping holiday planned in the South of France. A few training sessions took place, along with some meals and of course, the local wine…

Xavier came to Galway with his family that August. Gifts were exchanged, speeches were made and the twinning was official!

That led to annual trips to each other’s clubs. Each September, SGAC members travel to Ceret to run a mountainous and beautiful 20km race.

The Vigatanes came in big numbers to the ‘Rock & Road’ races in Kinvara in March 2015. Numbers look to be even bigger this August (2016) with 30 of our French friends coming for the Claregalway 10k!
